Shame on Nike for re-signing Michael Vick

My dog says shame on Nike for re-signing Michael Vick to endorse its products. If Vick had tortured and killed kids, would people be so forgiving? No way! And animals are just as innocent and helpless as children are at the hand of an abuser. SHAME ON NIKE.

Click HERE to send a note to Nike customer service, letting them know how disgusted you are by its decision to work with a man who murdered so many dogs.

Another Nutro dog food recall

My dog says that Nutro has recalled some of its puppy food because it may contain plastic. To learn more about the recall, click HERE.

Please sign the anti foie gras petition

My dog says he hopes you'll sign the petition to encourage Amazon to stop selling foie gras on its website. The manner by which this "delicacy" is produced is cruel and inhumane and involves the force-feeding of birds with pipes and tubes. The procedure is considered so barbaric, that production has been banned in the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Poland, Sweden, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, Finland, Luxembourg, Denmark, and Israel.

To learn more about the suffering that ducks and geese endure to "make" foie gras, click HERE. To sign the petition to Amazon, please click HERE.

Wonderful Indian legend

My dog says he really likes this Indian legend:

When a human dies, there is a bridge he or she must cross to enter Heaven. At the head of the bridge waits every animal that human encountered during their lifetime. The animals, based on what they know of this person, decide which humans may cross the bridgeand which are turned away.

Speak out for coyotes

My dog says that the coyotes of Griffith Park in Los Angeles need you to speak out on their behalf. Seven of them were shot and killed this month by federal officials when citizens reported two biting incidents with the animals. However, no efforts were made to verify that the seven coyotes who were killed were actually the animals who approached the people in the park.

If you are on the side of the coyotes and want such issues to be handled in a humane fashion (rather than resorting to immediate killing with no DNA verification), please come to a special meeting tonight to discuss the issue. The details are below:

When: Tuesday, Sept 29 at 6:30 p.m.
Where: The Russian Orthodox Church, 650 Micheltorena St, Los Angeles, CA 90026-3623
Sponsored by: Councilman Tom LaBonge

Embrace your inner dog today!

My dog says he loves this piece on people acting more like dogs. Wouldn't the world be an amazing place if everyone were as pure of heart as a dog?

Things We Can Learn From A Dog

Never pass up the opportunity to go for a joyride.

Delight in the simple joy of a long walk.

When loved ones come home, always run to greet them.

Eat with gusto and enthusiasm.

If what you want lies buried, dig until you find it.

Allow the experience of fresh air and the wind in your face to be pure ecstasy.

Be loyal.

Run, romp, and play daily.

When someone is having a bad day, be silent, sit close by, and nuzzle them gently.

Avoid biting when a simple growl will do.

When you're happy, dance around and wag your entire body.

No matter how often you're scolded, don't buy into the guilt thing and pout...run right back and make friends.

When it's in your best interest, practice obedience.

Let others know when they've invaded your territory.

Take naps and stretch before rising.

Never pretend to be something you're not.

Thrive on attention and let people touch you.

On hot days, drink lots of water and lay under a shady tree.

Sleepy hippos

My dog says he loves this photo of a napping hippo and her baby. Did you know that the name hippotamus comes from the Greek words "hippos," meaning horse, and "potamus," meaning river?

Learn more about these wonderful creatures by clicking HERE.

Rescue Ink Unleashed premieres tonight

My dog says that you MUST watch Rescue Ink Unleashed tonight on the National Geographic channel. If you don't know about the amazing guys of Rescue Ink, click HERE. They are tattooed, biker dudes who love animals and aren't afraid to use their muscles to fight for them.

They also just put out a brand new book this month, Rescue Ink: How Ten Guys Saved Countless Dogs and Cats, Twelve Horses, Five Pigs, One Duck, and a Few Turtles. Click HERE to check it out on Amazon and get it at a sweet discount. And, if you're in the New York area, the guys have some book signings coming up, too.

I love these men. Tough exteriors with hearts of gold. Totally my heroes. Go Rescue Ink!

Colorado gets veggie billboards

My dog says that the group Mercy for Animals (MFA) is doing some excellent work in Colorado. This week, 15 billboards went up throughout Denver, promoting a vegetarian lifestyle. To read about the campaign and to see more of the billboards, click HERE.

Love animals, the planet, and your health? Want to know more about becoming a vegetarian? Click HERE to learn the facts.

Real men neuter their dogs

My dog says he loves this poster that advocates neutering. Why do men have such an issue with getting their male dogs fixed? Okay, I know why, but grow up! Getting your dog altered has so many health benefits and it's a quick, non-invasive procedure (I know, I had it done!).

Besides, countless animals are born each year only to die because there aren't enough homes. Be responsible and do the right thing. Neuter your boys and spay your girls (animals, that is).

Blindness is no setback for animals

My dog says he just discovered a great website dedicated to the care of blind horses. The people who host the site also operate an animal sanctuary. Rolling Dog Ranch in Montana is home to blind horses, deaf dogs, and other loving creatures with neurological or orthopedic disabilities.

Animals with a physical or mental disability are still amazing companions. Over the years, my family has adopted four blind dogs and one deaf one. They got around remarkably well and possessed all the same great attributes as our other dogsthey were affectionate, playful, and ever so grateful.

Won't you consider adopting an animal with a disability who really needs a home? Or, perhaps, a donation to Rolling Dog Ranch or your favorite animal rescue group?

Babysitters by day, dogfighters at night

My dog says this story about a dog fighting ring at a daycare facility in Illinois is quite sad. Thank goodness all the dogs have been saved and are now being rehabilitated by the Animal Welfare League.

Cat uses one of his nine lives

My dog says he's glad to hear that Herman the Cat is in good hands after his "owner" strangled him and beat him against a wall. People who hurt animals have no soul.

To read Herman's story, click HERE.

It's Elephant Appreciation Day!

My dog says that today, September 22, is Elephant Appreciation Day. To honor these magnificent animals, why not learn more about them by visiting The Elephant Sanctuary website.

This amazing sanctuary in Tennessee is home to Asian and African elephants who were previously on display at zoos, circuses, or other entertainment venues. Now, they can enjoy their retirement years on soft dirt and green grass. The sanctuary even has a live Elecam where you can see what the elephants are doing on any given day.

It costs $125,000 annually to take care of each of elephant under the sanctuary's care, so why not consider "adopting" one to help pay for his/her care? Now, that would be a nice way to celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day!

Humane mousetrap saves lives

My dog says he found a mousetrap that he likes. It captures the mouse safely so he/she doesn't get hurt. Then, you just release the little one in a field away from your home.

Rodents might be pests, but they're just trying to survive like all of us. And they certainly don't deserve to suffer a painful death in an old-fashioned trap. To learn more about the Humane Mousetrap and/or to purchase one, click HERE.

Wild horses and burros need your help

My dog says that burros and wild horses need your help today! In the coming weeks, thousands will be rounded up in California, Nevada, Idaho, Oregon, and Wyoming; some penned and many sold at auction, to eventually be killed. Please take action now and send an email to voice your outrage. These are wild animals who are being taken from their homes.

To learn more and to help these magnificent wild animals, please click HERE. A sample letter is provided to help you understand the facts, and email addresses are listed for your convenience.

Free kitty kibble

My dog says you can get a free 10 to 12 ounce bag of Royal Canin cat kibble by clicking HERE. Just create a profile for your cat on Catster and you're good to go. Chow down, kitties, chow down!

Say no to dissection

My dog says with the new school year in full swing, he's sure many students will soon be asked to dissect animals in their science classes. Whether you're asked to cut up a frog, pig, cat, or other animal, many states have policies in place that require schools to provide alternatives for students who don't want to slice up animals (there's a plethora of wonderful software programs out there now!).

As a student, it may be hard to find your voice and stand up for what you believe in, but find the courage to do it. To learn more about dissection alternatives and what you can do to opt out of dissection days, click HERE.

Animals are fascinating

My dog says he loves this photo that shows an armadillo curling up into a ball. So many kinds of fascinating animals out there.

Learn to train with love and respect

My dog says if you're in the Los Angeles area, you must attend this great seminar by renowned animal expert, Warren Eckstein (if you're not in L.A., check out Warren's books on Amazon). Warren's approach to working with animals is that they are familycreatures to be loved, not dominated. If you have companion animals of your own or if you rescue animals to place into new homes, you will get lots of useful information on animal behavior during this 3-hour session.

Free money for your favorite animal charity

My dog says The Christie Cookie Company is sponsoring a contest that will give $25,000 to charity. You may choose from a list of charities or pick your own (so pick your favorite animal rescue group or animal sanctuary!).

$10,000 goes to the charity with the most nominations, $5,000 to the second place winner, and $1,000 to the next 10 charities with the most votes. Be sure to nominate your favorite animal charity by October 15, 2009.

Rescue group falls victim to theft

My dog says a person who would steal from an animal rescue group is a low life. Home Fur-Ever in Detroit lost a van, trailer, and $6,000 worth of gear to a heartless thief this week.

If you can donate animal equipment (they especially need large crates to transport dogs to adoption events), or are able to make a monetary donation to replace the items, mail it to Home Fur-Ever, P.O. 10203, Detroit 48210. Or, if you're in the Detroit area, you may drop off donations in person from noon to 4 p.m. this Saturday at Petco, 1217 Coolidge, in Troy, Michigan.

To learn more about the work of Home Fur-Ever, visit their website by clicking HERE.

Jon and Kate dump their dogs

My dog says he is disgusted that Jon and Kate (of Jon and Kate Plus 8 fame) are dumping their dogs because they're too much work. Dogs are a LIFETIME commitment, not some thing to be discarded if your life changes.

However, based on what Jon has said in the past about his kids being rough with the dogs, maybe Shoka and Nala will find a better home the second time around. Dogs can be a wonderful addition to a family with children, but the kids must be taught to interact with them in a kind and loving manner.

Good luck, Shoka and Nala. Here's hoping your new family is better.

P.S. Don't breed or buy while homeless animals die. Adopt your companion animals from the shelter!

Compassion for animals comes to the Wii

My dog says that there is a GREAT new game on the Wii to teach your children about animal rescue. Beverly Nation wrote a wonderful article about the game, so go right to source and read her review HERE.

Imagine raising a new generation of compassionate kids who care about and respect animals. Wow, that would be a wonderful thing.

Yes, declawing is mutilation

My dog says he loves this comic by the very talented Dan Piraro. Follow Dan's blog by clicking HERE. His comics tackle many issues, but Dan is always using his talent to enlighten people about animal issues. Yay Dan!

P.S. See some of Dan's other great animal comics by clicking HERE (scroll down to see everything). They're available for purchase on notecards, posters, and more.

Keeping your pup's hour glass shape

My dog says he just learned this handy metric for keeping your dog svelte. Your pup should walk two blocks a day for each 10 pounds of body weight. That'll keep him/her healthy and trim.

Dr. Oz has some tips for chunky pets HERE.

Help Lucy the elephant

My dogs says Lucy the elephant needs help. She was abducted as a baby in Sri Lanka and is now 34 years old with many health problems. To top it off, she's behind bars in a cold, cold Canada zoo.

To learn more about Lucy's situation, click HERE. To help Lucy and give her the retirement she deserves, click HERE.

* Also, to learn more about what you can do to help elephants in general, visit In Defense of Animals' elephant website by clicking HERE.

Congress mulls tax deduction for animals

My dog says Congress is finally doing something to help companion animals and their families. A new bill entitled the HAPPY Act (Humanity and Pets Partnered Through the Years), or H.R. 3501, would provide pet parents with a $3,500 deduction on their taxes for veterinary care.

Find out more about the HAPPY Act (perfect name, eh?) by clicking HERE. Even more importantly, sign the petition to get Congress to act on it and pass it today. The petition is HERE.

Now those are some pearly whites

My dog says this is an AMAZING picture of a shark! Courtesy of the New York Times.

Fun events to go to with your dog

China kills dogs in massive slaughter

My dog says what happened to dogs last week in China makes him sick to his stomach. Death squads killed dogs and residents were asked to kill their own dogs. Read about it by clicking HERE. IFAW has the scoop.

* The flip side of this is the story of a woman in China who just paid $600 for a dog. The article is HERE.

Amen, bow wow

My dog says he's not a religious canine, but he does like this video by WJ Francisco that compares dogs to God. It's catchy and sweet.

Stop breed discrimination and vote NO in this poll

My dogs says to vote NO in this poll on Parade.com. Pit bulls have the right to a loving family just like any other breed. Click HERE to vote NO.

Helping lost or injured animals

My dogs says you should read this helpful tip sheet from the Tree House Animal Foundation about helping stray animals. If you've never helped lost animals before, it has some good information. From catching animals with litters to helping orphaned wildlife and everything in between, it's a handy resource for any animal lover.

Sometimes animals need help and this fact sheet will give you all the guidance you need.

Keep your animals away from these household items

My dog says he discovered a good list of items that are toxic to your companion animals. The addition of sugarless gum is fairly new, so be sure to look through all 10 items to keep your animals safe.

Click to help fund food for animals

My dog says that you should make The Animal Rescue Site the homepage on your computer. It has fun merchandise for animal lovers and if you click the button on the homepage daily, you'll help fund food for needy dogs and cats. Yes, just a click daily and you can help animals!

Also, if you become a fan of The Animal Rescue Site on Facebook, you'll get extra special offers and discounts. Thank you Animal Rescue Site for making it so easy to help animals!

Help end the dog meat industry in South Korea

My dog says 2 million dogs are brutally killed each year in South Korea to support the dog meat industry. Want to help? Sign the petition by United Dogs and Cats and watch the YouTube video while you're on the site (there's nothing graphic in it, but it's a good overview of the problem in South Korea).

Shut down live markets

My dog says you can help stop live markets in the Bay Area. Too many animals suffer and die at these markets due to stress, heat, and overcrowding. If you're within a 20-mile radius of San Francisco, click HERE to learn how you can help.

Military dogs need homes

My dog says he just discovered this great group that's trying to place dogs who have served in the military. These animals have served our country with valor and the least they serve is a place to call home. Find out how you can help or adopt by clicking HERE.

Brave little rat lives to see another day

My dog says he just read an amazing little story (with fantastic photos) of a leopard letting a rat steal her food. Click HERE to see more close-up photos and read the tale (no pun intended!).

Horses aren't food

My dog says that horses should not be killed for their meat. To see the movie trailer for Saving America's Horses: A Nation Betrayed, click HERE. This film exposes the horrors of the horse meat industry and producers need your support to finish the film and get it out to the public. To learn how you can help, click HERE.

Of course dogs can count

My dog says he loves this quote:

"If you think dogs can't count, try putting three dog biscuits in your pocket and then giving Fido only two of them." - Phil Pastoret

Dog toys that look like real meat

My dog says you can win free dog toys by entering this contest sponsored by Dogmeat Dog Toys. You can even get "extra" entries if you spread the word. Entry deadline is September 15, 2009. For all the details, click HERE.

Cats love free grass

My dog says cats can get free grass seeds from Poopsie Cat Products so they can grow some greens. Just send a SASE (self addressed stamped envelope) with three stamps and you get the seeds for free. Click HERE for details.

Find out your mutt's DNA

My dog says there's a "Guess My Grandpa" contest on DogTipper.com. The winners get to find out the DNA make-up of their mixed breed dog. Might be interesting.

Dog saves 2-year-old

My dog says dogs are heroes all the time. Read this brief blurb about a dog who saved a lost toddler. Yay Koda!

Assistance for pet guardians

My dog says he found a helpful list of resources available to animal guardians across the United States. From pet food to spay/neuter assistance, it lists info by state. Check it out if you, or someone you know, could use a little help.

Speak out for wolves

My dog says that wolves need your help. Protections have been lifted and wolves are being killed in alarming numbers. All the info you need to help is HERE (e.g. email addresses, phone numbers, and a sample letter).

Children's book with dog-friendly message

My dog says he heard about this great children's book that educates kids about chained dogs. He hasn't read it, but he'd like to. Pud says two paws up for this one. Companion animals belong with their families; not isolated and tethered.

Dog becomes mom to abandoned piglet

My dog says he just read a great article about a Rhodesian Ridgeback who is nursing a wild baby pig. Dogs are amazing creatures.

Save a chicken

My dog says September is National Chicken Month. Instead of celebrating by eating chickens, why not take this time to learn more about these wonderful creatures. Better yet, celebrate by giving a chicken the gift of life and going vegetarian. Compassion Over Killing has tips on how you can help our feathered friends.

Pitbull discrimination comes to Massachusetts

My dog says that he's very dismayed that breed discrimination is coming to Massachusetts. The proposal includes, among other things, a section that says pit puppies must be killed as soon as they are born. Read about how you can help by visiting Best Friends.

Clean up on aisle three

My dog says he just read this great article in the New York Times. It's about people in the Pearl District of Portland who take their dogs into all kinds of storesincluding grocery stores! Apparently, it's pretty common place there. Pud says he wants to relocate to Oregon.

Ban BSL

My dog says he just found this useful site about the pitbull ban in Denver. Breed specific legislation (BSL) is wrong and dangerous. Help repeal the ban in Denver and don't let a breed ban come to your town!

Always adopt

My dog says not to breed or buy while homeless animals die. Watch this video from Born to Die Pets that gives a behind the scenes look at an animal shelter.

If you love your animals, get them altered. Spaying and neutering saves lives and makes your animals healthier! I'm neutered and I swear on a stack of Milk Bones that it didn't hurt a bit.

It's too hot for summer trips in the car

My dog says it's still really hot out there in the summer sun. Please don't leave your dog in a parked car, even if the windows are cracked. Temperatures can skyrocket in no time and kill your dog within minutes. When it's hot outside, leave Fido at home where it's safe.

For tips on how you can help get out the word and protect dogs from hot cars, visit My Dog is Cool.

Animal calendar needs submissions

My dog says if you have a doggie family member who had a former life as a chained or penned dog, submit him or her for the Dogs Deserve Better calendar. Just send a current high-res shot and two paragraphs telling your dog's story to dogs@dogsdeservebetter.org this week.

Good luck to all the contestants and I'd like to meet Miss January when she's selected! Bow wow!

What a waste!

My dog says he is very disappointed to learn that the Pasadena Humane Society has discarded donated pet carriers and put them in the trash. If they received too many donations from caring animal lovers (they needed them to help with the animals coming in from the fires), these carriers could have been given to some other animal group who needed them.

They might have been a little dirty, but were in perfect working order otherwise. Shame on PHS for being so wasteful and for trashing items that could have been helpful to other animals or rescue groups. Puddy says thumbs down on this one.

Bad pet guardians leave dogs in cages to die

My dog says he's very upset about this article on the Los Angeles fires. Firefighters found the charred frames of pet carriers outside a destroyed home. Inside one, the remains of three small dogs.

Who would cage their animals and then leave them behind? No way for them to even fend for themselves or escape on their own. Terrible, just terrible. Puddy says these people should never be allowed to have animals again. I agree.

Harvey Levin is great

My dog says that he knew he liked Harvey Levin of TMZ. Last week, Harvey made John Mayer donate $25,000 to two great animal rescue organizations when John lost a bet (Ace of Hearts and Pet Orphans of Southern California were the lucky groups).

Here's some new info from today about the four-legged recipients of the cash. Pud says extra treats and ear scratches for Harvey!

Emergency ambulance services for animals

My dog says you should check out Pet-a-Medic. It's a great new service that offers emergency medical services to animals in select areas of Los Angeles. It even has an ambulance with all the necessities for your ailing fur-friend. Check it out now. When emergency strikes you'll be too frantic to do your research.

Dick's stops selling Vick jerseys

My dog says to call Dick's Sporting Goods to thank them for discontinuing the sale of Michael Vick jerseys at its stores. If you've shopped there in the past, tell them you'll continue to be a loyal supporter. If you haven't shopped there before, tell them you'll start now because of what they've done.

The store's choice to stop selling jerseys says a lot about how they feel about Vick and his treatment of animals, so please let them know they made the right decision. Call (866) 677-4771, extension "0" to voice your thanks or visit their website to send a comment.

Dogs rule, Vick drools!

Free treats for doggie shelters and rescue dogs

My dog says that Best Bully Sticks is giving away hundreds of dollars in treats to animal shelters and rescue dogs. Find out how you can win by clicking HERE. ** Pud says he hasn't tried these so he can't offer any insight on the yumminess factor.

YUCIAPA FIRE:

– Large animals may be taken to the Yuciapa Equestrian Center at 13273 California St.
– Those needing assistance with animals should call San Bernardino Animal Control at (800) 472-5609.

Wild animals are the #1 victims in fires

My dog says that people should remember that fires have a huge impact on wild animals, too. This article is the only one he's seen that even mentions the death toll on animals.

Animal organizations need to enter this contest

My dog says that dog rescue groups should check out this promotion from Rachel Ray. $200,000 is going to organizations that support animal rescue, rehabilitation, or adoption. More details HERE. Hurry, deadline for submissions is September 30, 2009.
