Product Review: Kong Naturals Incline Cat Scratcher

My dog says today we're here to review the Kong Naturals Incline Cat Scratcher which we got from Chewy.com. KitCat, our resident feline tester, had a busy month trying this out along with a new litter (which we also reviewed here). Was the scratcher from Kong a hero or a zero? Let's find out.

The Kong Naturals Incline Cat Scratcher measures
19 x 10 and is 10 inches at the highest part of the incline

Product Overview:

The Kong Naturals Incline Cat Scratcher is made of the usual corrugated cardboard, but this product is anything but usual. Unlike the ordinary scratchers that you just set flat on the floor, this particular scratcher is at an incline (and it's wider than a traditional, cardboard scratcher, too). The scratcher comes set into a sturdy frame that allows it to be cradled at an angle. This means your cat can reach and claw in a more natural scratching position.

When I put down the scratcher, KitCat didn't pay it any mind. So, I picked him up and put him on it; that is all it took for him to fall in love. He started scratching it within one second, literally one second!

KitCat immediately went to work clawing the scratcher.
In addition to the incline, the Kong scratcher has another fun feature: three cubby holes that open into the area beneath the scratcher. And, bonus...there's a hanging toy inside!

The shiny toy is accessible through three cubby
holes in the back of the scratcher.

If you have a young kitten, no doubt he will have a kick crawling in and out of the cubby holes and batting at the toy close up. However, KitCat has grown super fast and although he's only six months old he's almost the size of a full-grown adult. In other words, no cubby hiding for my kitty.

But...

That said, KitCat discovered the holes and toy on his own, within just a few minutes. He went wild pulling at the toy and jumping from side to side (and to the back) to try to get the toy out through one of the holes. His head fit comfortably into each hole so he could look in as he devised his murder plot against the toy. Bottom line: cubby holes and toy equals a huge thumbs up. KitCat had a blast.

Shiny toy, you must die!

Another nice feature of the Kong cat scratcher is that it's double-sided. Once your cat has done some serious damage, you can just take out the scratcher and flip it over. Then, after it is ripped to shreds, the incline can be refilled with a new scratcher (just be sure to buy the double wide scratcher which serves as a handy refill). The cardboard incline frame can be reused again and again (and, honestly, even if the frame does get scratched up a little it should still work for quite a long time).

Lastly, a small bag of North American, mountain-grown catnip is included with the scratcher. If your cat needs a little extra enticement to explore his new toy, this will fit the bill for sure. I didn't apply the catnip, but KitCat knew where it had been taped (it was attached to the scratcher, under the label on the top). It didn't take long for him to start rubbing his head and body where there was undoubtedly some residual catnip smell.

Even without sprinking the catnip, the cardboard
still retains some of the smell.

Cost:

The current cost for the scratcher is only $5.55 on Chewy (an incredible price for sure!). That's a steal as the going rate for the small, flat scratcher is easily twice that at a retail store. The double wide refill is only $6.99 on Chewy as of this writing.

Origin:

Made in America

Rating:

Hands down, this scratcher is worth every penny--and more. Everything about it is unique and way better than the average cardboard scratcher.

KitCat approves.

From the extra width, to the incline, to the cubby holes, to the toy, KitCat had a great time scratchng and playing until he passed out on it. Four paws out of four for the Kong Naturals Incline Cat Scratcher. KitCat says this one is a HERO!
