Product Review: Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Formula for Cats

My dog says we're having a great time celebrating St. Patrick's Day this week! We're all about the green, so we chose a cat food with a green label to taste test for you this month: Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Feline Formula in Gravy for cats! Is this product all that it's green label purports to be? Let's see!

Ingredients:

We always choose high quality foods to share with you and this one is no different. The first several ingredients in this canned cat food are salmon, fish broth, chicken broth, chicken liver, and dried egg whites. Right there it pretty much sounds like some fancy dish you'd make for human company coming over for a special occasion, huh? There's also smoked salmon, roasted venison, ocean fish, peas, tomatoes, blueberries, and raspberries.

This grain-free food is formulated to lower carb intake and increase water intake. Both really good things for the cat in your life.

Oh, and if your cat prefers a different taste, the Taste of the Wild canned food also comes in Canyon River flavor that contains trout, fish broth, vegetable broth, ocean fish, smoked salmon, carrots, and sweet potatoes.

Usability:

This is a chunky food. Although it's labelled as a gravy product, it doesn't have the usual watery gravy you generally see. It's more like a thick sauce that keeps the chunks moist, but it's nothing your cat would lap up. The food is essentially little cubes of meat and they're cut into sizes just perfect for your kitty's adorable little mouth.

We were all ready to give the Taste of the Wild to KitCat to try, but this duck in St. Patrick's Day garb horned in for a sample. We think she wandered away from a parade or pageant.

No duck in this food, right?
No no, Miss Duck! Please enjoy with confidence!
You don't seriously expect me to try this
after that prissy little duck put her beak in it, do you?

Origin:

Made in the U.S.A. (Sorry, but we couldn't find a food from Ireland to review for you this month. The leprechauns must have blocked it all at the border.)

Cost:

The size you see sampled here is the 3 ounce can (we call it 3 leaf clover size), which is sold in a 24-can case for $16.58 on Chewy. They also have a 5.5 ounce can that sells for $30.96 for 24 cans.

Oh my! A leprechaun chased away the duck and laid claim to these cans.
Next best thing to a pot o' gold, don't cha' know!

Rating:

As is usually the case, when we give KitCat a food that comes in chunks, he likes to take it out one piece at a time, set it on the floor, eat it, and then go back for another chunk. It's quite ritualistic. That said, he really liked the Rocky Mountain formula and it was a hearty meal. Overall, a scrumptious dish to celebrate St, Patrick's Day (second only to corned beef and cabbage)!

Where's my shamrock garnish?
Fine, I'll try it anyway but I'm lodging a complaint with the appropriate authorities.

We give Taste of the Wild canned food in Rocky Mountain flavor two webbed feet up (that would normally be four paws, but the duck insisted we use her rating system this time!).

Thanks for reading and may there be a pot of gold at the end of your rainbow this holiday, my friends! Until next time...QUACK!

Product Review: Blue Buffalo Tasty Toppers for Cats

My dogs says today KitCat is here to share his feedback on Blue Buffalo Wilderness Tasty Toppers Wild Cuts for cats. We were looking for a special St. Patrick's Day treat especially for our "top" cat, so a "topper" seemed just like the festive thing we needed to celebrate with the leprechauns. KitCat has given us all his notes, so let's get started.

A good treat is like a four leaf clover; hard to find and lucky to have.

Ingredients:

We tested out the Tasty Chicken Morsels in Savory Gravy flavor for breakfast (top to the morning' to you!). The first five ingredients in the Tasty Toppers are chicken, chicken broth, water, chicken liver, and dried egg product. I have to wonder why "product" is after dried egg, but aside from that we're pretty pleased with these ingredients. It's a grain-free product, so paws up for that, plus there are no by-products, corn, soy, wheat, or artificial flavors, colors, or preservatives.

The Tasty Toppers also come in duck flavor and also salmon. These have the same ingredients as the chicken with the exception of the first ingredient, being duck and salmon, respectively.

We like our toppers with a side of shamrocks.

Usability:

Tasty Toppers are meant to be a topper for your cat's usual food (suitable to added on top of kibble or wet food), but it can also be used as a special treat. Luckily, we have some great cat foods in our rotation so we don't ever need to bribe KitCat to eat his food. So, we opted to use the Tasty Toppers as an evening snack.

Each pouch is three ounces so it could easily be used for two rounds of treats. You could certainly use it all at once if you prefer, but it's actually a good amount of food that could be stretched depending on your cat's needs. Although this food is in gravy, there is plenty of meat chunks in it. There's enough sauce to keep it moist and to give your kitty something yummy to lick up. Despite the gravy, though, this food is chock full of chicken.

Keep calm and eat with the leprechauns!

Origin:

Made in the U.S.A.

Cost:

The Blue Buffalo Wilderness Tasty Toppers is sold in a 24-pouch case case from Chewy and currently sells for $27.43 (the duck and salmon are just a little bit more). The price goes down by almost a buck fifty if you autoship it so it gets sent to you automatically.

KitCat's Irish eyes are smiling and his lrish tongue is licking!

Rating:

Looks like KitCat has found his pot gold at the end of the rainbow; he took to the Tasty Toppers right away! We'll be keeping this on hand for KitCat to enjoy long after St. Patrick's Day has passed. We give this Blue Buffalo product four out of four clovers!

Erin go bragh, my friends! May the luck of the Irish be with you this, and every, St. Patrick's Day!

Product Review: Greenies Grain-Free Teenie Size Dental Treats

My dog says clean teeth rule and treats are the best! That's why we chose to test out Greenies Dental Treats for dogs, a yummy chew that creates healthier teeth and gums! The thing we were most excited about when trying this product? A new TEENIE size we've never seen before, just perfect for tiny dogs!

Ingredients:

We were delighted to see the first ingredient in these grain-free Greenies was chickpeas. We love it when the first thing item on the list isn't some mystery ingredient that leaves us scratching our heads. There's also the usual gelatin and glycerin, along with dried potato, natural poultry flavor, and a host of vitamins and minerals.

Usability:

We've gotten dental treats for dogs in the past, but our smallest pups were never able to partake (even when we get the small size, the treats have always been too big). That's why we were thrilled to see this Teenie size!

Our product tester Vinnie weighs 7 pounds and he was able to chew on this easily and safely. The packaging says this size is for dogs 5 to 15 pounds, however I think you could safely give it to a dog as small as 3 or 4 pounds. I do think it's too tiny for my 11 pound dog, so I don't see the Teenie size being a good option for a pup as big as 15 pounds.

We've gotten many dental chews over the years, and they've all been hard. That's why we were curious to try these, since they're advertised as being flexible. And, sure enough, they are; you can bend them. The manufacturers says this unique texture allows the treat to contour so it cleans all the way down to the gum line when your dog sinks his teeth into it. Apparently that helps remove plaque and prevent further tartar build-up.

Origin:

Made in the United States of America!

Cost:

The 12-ounce, Teenie size bag has 43 pieces, so it'll last you quite awhile. At Chewy, the bag currently goes for $11.69 or you can get a 27-ounce box with 96 pieces for $25.34. The feeding instructions recommend one treat per day, so this is a very economical treat. (Below, Vinnie admires his good work and contemplates whether or not to eat the second half. He opted for yes.)

Rating:

Since Greenies are proven to help your dog's dental health, it's a great treat to give your pup on a daily basis. The crew here loved the Greenie Teenies from Chewy! Four paws way up from Vinnie!

Product Review: Solid Gold Purrfect Pairings Savory Mousse for Cats

My dog says we have another new cat food to review today: Purrfect Pairings by Solid Gold. This line of wet cat food comes in six varieties and we are excited to share with you our thoughts on the Savory Mousse with Shrimp and Goat Milk flavor (doesn't that sound yummy?).

Ingredients:

Normally we like to see meat as the first ingredient in our pet foods, but we made an exception on this product because we really liked the ingredient list as a whole. That said, the first ingredient in this flavor of Purrfect Pairings was water sufficient for processing, but the next three ingredients are shrimp, salmon, and tuna. The food smells deliciously fishy, but isn't overbearing. This is also a grain-free food, which we always love, plus there's goat milk!

After opening the cup and dishing it out for KitCat, we quickly realized why water is the first ingredient. The Purrfect Pairings food is wonderfully light and soft; now we get why they call this a mousse. It's just as soft, if not softer, than canned kitten food. After reading more about this product line we realized it is 75% moisture, so it's designed to be a good dietary source of water for your cat's urinary tract health.

Usability:

Purrfect Pairings comes in 2.75 ounce cups; that makes it a smidge less than what you'll typically find in a small can of kitten food. That said, the mousse style plumps up the food and it actually looks like significantly more than it actually is (the cups are even bigger than you'd expect). Solid Gold says to feed two cups per six pounds of body weight, however you could also serve less if you wanted to offer your cat a snack.

When ordered from Chewy (which is where we get all our food and supplies), Purrfect Pairings comes in a six-cup case. To ensure the foil lids don't get pierced, it's packaged nicely in a tray which is easy to store in your pantry.

The foil is easy to peel back and the mousse looks and smells great.

Origin:

Made in the good ole' U.S.A.!

Cost:

A six-cup case of the shrimp and goat milk flavor is currently $8.34 when you order from Chewy. Although sometimes you'll find that different flavors of food cost different prices, all six flavors of the Solid Gold Purrfect Pairings cost the same price. (The other flavors are tuna and goat milk, chicken and goat milk, chicken liver and goat milk, salmon and goat milk, and whitefish and goat milk. All are grain-free.)

Rating:

When we gave KitCat the food, we weren't in the least bit surprised that he goggled it up. It smells good, has great texture, and looks delish.

KitCat is happy to rate the Solid Gold Purrfect Pairings mousse an enthusiastic four out of four paws! We look forward to trying the other five flavors soon.
