Product Review: Halo Indoor Cat Formula

My dog says KitCat has been busy eating his little heart out this month so he could bring you another review. This time, our favorite feline tested Halo's Indoor Cat formula wet food. This grain-free recipe is one item in a large line of indoor cat food products that Halo offers. So, let's see what the Big K has to say!

Ingredients:

Halo has recently changed a bunch of its foods and remarketed them as "holistic." While some of the recipe changes we're not wild about, the Halo grain free chicken recipe we tried has left the first five ingredients as-is in their latest formulation. They are chicken, chicken liver, chicken broth, natural flavor, and tricalcium phosphate. The chicken is cage free and the fruits and veggies in the recipe are non GMO.

When we opened the first can, we were a little alarmed to see little green spots all over the top. However, after reading the ingredient list we quickly realized that spinach is the sixth ingredient. So, no need for alarm when you see those green specks.

Usability:

The firmness of a wet food is always something we pay special attention to. Foods that are too hard are never well-received by our crew so we prefer foods that are easy to mash up. The Halo Indoor Cat wet food is a medium firmness. When you scoop it out, it holds its shape without falling apart. However, it is very easy to mash up so KitCat can chow down. There is also a little broth/gravy at the bottom so it's nice to scoop that out and add a little to the top so it's extra moist and enticing.

Origin:

Made in the United States.

Cost:

A 12-can case of the 5.5 ounce food is currently $19.95 on Chewy.com. That's the standard cat food can size, not the smaller one.

Rating:

KitCat likes this food. He usually didn't finish it all at once, but he always went back to eat it all. We give Halo Chicken Recipe Grain Free Indoor Cat wet food three out of four paws up!

Product Review: Instinct Raw Boost Mixers

My dog says we love simple ingredient foods. That's why we jumped at the chance to test out Instinct by Nature's Variety Raw Boost Mixers. What did the canine crew think of this dried food topper (they sure liked the smell of the bag!)? Let's get started...

Ingredients:

Although this is not a one ingredient food, it's still a simple ingredient recipe which we like. We tried the turkey flavor and were pleased to learn it is cage free turkey and the veggies and fruits are non GMO. There is no grain, potato, corn, wheat, soy, by-product meal, or artificial colors or preservatives, either.

We normally list the first five ingredients, but we're going to list them all this time since we think it's useful. The mixer includes turkey, turkey liver, pumpkin seeds, turkey heart, carrots, apples, butternut squash, ground flaxseed, montmorillonite clay, dried kelp, broccoli, mixed tocopherols, apple cider vinegar, salmon oil, rosemary extract, blueberries, and dried chicory root.

The mixers also come in other varieties including chicken, beef, and lamb.

Usability:

Since this is a dry nugget, it's very easy to use and takes no time to prepare. The mixer can be used to top kibble, wet food, and can even be used as a treat. The pieces are slightly different sizes, but are generally about the size of the first section of your pinky finger. Small dogs can also eat the pieces just fine since they're easy to chew and not hard like some other dried food products we've tried.

Origin:

Made in the United States.

Cost:

At chewy.com, the 6 ounce bag of The Instinct by Nature's Variety Raw Boost Mixers is currently $10.79 and the 14 ounce is $25.19. This price is in line with most freeze dried foods which always cost more than standard fare.

Rating:

The dogs just love this mixer! We used it as a topper for kibble and also as a treat. It's a solid four paws up, for sure!
