Product Review: Natural Balance Delectable Delights for Cats

My dog says today's review is going to the dogs...er, cats! Yes, today, we'll be reviewing a moist cat food from Natural Balance and it's Delectable Delights line of foods. Without further delay, let's get to it!

For this review, we selected the Life's a Beach recipe of the Delectable Delights line. This pate-style wet food is packaged in a 2.5 ounce tub, not a tray. That means each portion is a nice, big one! But, what's in it? Let's see!

This gourmet-style, grain-free pate is fortified with vitamins, minerals, and taurine to help maintain healthy eyes and heart. There's also omega 3 and 6 fatty acids for healthy skin and coat. The primary ingredients are just as solid. The first five ingredients are tuna broth, tuna, sardines, whitefish, and carrots. There's also mackerel, crab, and spinach in this recipe as well. The dark spots on top are the spinach.

It says this recipe is in gravy, but you'll probably see that the gravy amount varies a little from tub to tub. That's probably because some servings may absorb the gravy a little more than others. It's a soft, super moist food, though, and its moisture content is 80% so it's very enticing. And, the smell? Ohhhh, so nice and fishy! Mmmmmm!

Now, onto the tastin'!

KitCat says mmmmmmm! Fishalicious! Add this to our regular rotation, mom! Look at his empty dish! He ate it ALL!

The Natural Balance Delectable Delights is available on Chewy.com in a 12 tub case. At around a buck twenty per tub, it's a great price for a high quality food. There's also several other flavors to try out, so there are plenty of recipes to please your kitty! We've conferred with the KitCatster and he says we're giving this food a four out of four paw rating! Life is a beach, indeed!

Product Review: Instinct Raw Boost Mixers for Cats

My dog says today we'll be taking a look at kitty yummies! Well, Instinct by Nature's Variety Raw Boost Mixers can be used as a mix-in, topper, or a treat, whichever your feline prefers. So, let's take a look at this item and see what our taste tester KitCat thinks!

Instinct is a freeze dried food and we let KitCat sample the chicken flavor.  One of the nice things about this food is it's an all natural, grain-free, minimally processed, raw, whole food. It's made with cage-free chicken, chicken liver, pumpkin seeds, carrots, apples, butternut squash, turkey liver, turkey heart, and a few other all natural ingredients (all fruits and veggies in this recipe are non-GMO, too!). Freeze dried foods remove the moisture, while locking in the nutrients and flavor. Therefore, it's generally a really solid food choice for your pets.

We've added these little nuggets to the kitty kibble and we've also given them out as treats. Each piece is about the size of woman's fingernail (not the false ones!) so they're a good size for eating. Oh, and this food is made in the United States! But, all this said, did KitCat like it?

He did! Meowza!

We got the Instinct by Nature's Variety Raw Boost Mixers for Cats from Chewy.com where it also has overwhelmingly positive reviews. It comes in a 6 ounce bag and is a good price for a freeze dried food. Six ounces may not sound like a lot, but remember that this is freeze dried so it's light and actually a good amount of food. You'll probably be surprised how long it lasts!

So, while KitCat is munching on his Mixers, we'll go ahead and submit his four out of four paws up rating. This product is a real winner!

Product Review: Now Fresh Cat Kibble

My dog says we're anxious to share our latest review with you! This time, we'll be talking about kitty kibble! So, without further adieu, let's get to learning more about Now Fresh dry food for cats!

Now Fresh is a product by Petcurean and is a Canadian brand. It's a high-end food that prides itself on what it contains...and what it doesn't. As for what is has, it includes Omega 3 and Omega 6 fatty acids (from coconut and canola) for a soft and shiny coat, prebiotics and probiotics to aid in healthy digestion, and lots of protein to help a kitty live an active lifestyle! As for what it lacks, it's nothing you want anyway! That means no by-products, gluten, grains, rendered meats, corn, wheat, soy, or fillers.

KitCat, our feline tester, tried the adult recipe, fish flavor. The first five ingredients are deboned trout, whole dried eggs, potatoes, potato flour, and peas. The recipe also contains deboned salmon, deboned herring, and an assortment of fruits and veggies including, tomato, alfalfa, appples, carrots, sweet potatoes, squash, pumpkin, bananas, blueberries, cranberries, blackberries, pomegranate, papayas, lentils, broccoli, and dried chicory root (for those who don't know, that helps your kitty's poo stink less!).

The kibble is an almost round size, smaller than a pea. It's not disc-shaped like many kibbles. It's actually a little smooshed on two ends, but otherwise circular. The different shape didn't impact KitCat one way or the other and it was easy for him to eat.

So, let's get to what matters most...the taste test! Did Kitty McCatty like it? YES! He really did! Every time we put some in his bowl, we find it disappears very quickly!

Chewy.com has a great selection of Now Fresh recipes for cats (and also dogs!). They also carry all life stages: kitten (and puppy!), adult, and senior.

Overall, the Now Fresh Fish Recipe for Adult Cats was a big hit and earns a top score of four out of four paws! This kibble is now in our regular rotation and we look forward to trying the other flavors, as well. KitCat is already a devoted fan and wants to visit Canada to get closer to his new favorite food. In the meantime, he'll have to settle for adding Now Fresh to his monthly Chewy autoship order.

Product Review: Solid Gold Triple Layer Food Cups for Cats

My dog says today the pups are stepping aside and handing over the blog to KitCat, our in-house kitty reviewer! This week, KitCat checks out Solid Gold Triple Layer wet cat food. Without further adieu, let's get on with the show!

The Solid Gold Triple Layer has three amazing textures to it: pate, mousse, and shreds! The mousse is pumpkin and the shreds and pate are both meat protein. This food is for all ages, from kitten to senior. The layered style is a nice way to introduce different types of food to a kitten, especially, so he/she gets used to a variety of consistencies at a young age.

As always, we pay extra close attention to the first several ingredients in every food we test. For this variety, we found: chicken, turkey, pumpkin, egg white, whole egg, and tuna. That sounds like something yummy you'd make for a Sunday brunch, doesn't it?

Both grain and gluten free, this recipe is void of fillers like corn, wheat, and soy. There are also no artificial preservatives or flavors, and no carrageenan or BPA. What there is, though, is lots of meat protein and fiber-rich pumpkin which aids with healthy digestion.

Now, to the taste test...

KitCat sauntered over to the food and ate about half of it. He went back to his dish to polish it off a short time later. He ate all of food (we gave him a half cup at a time), but he didn't scarf it down like the Solid Gold Purrfect Pairings. Therefore, we give the Triple Layer three and a half out of four paws. We've never given KitCat pumpkin before, so undoubtedly that was a new flavor and texture to him. These wet food cups are filled with quality ingredients that we're really happy about, though, so we're going to try some of the other Triple Layer varieties to see if we find another flavor he might prefer (we got the turkey flavor, but there are also salmon, beef, and chicken recipes available).

The Solid Gold Triple Layer Mousse with Shreds is available on Chewy.com in a 6-cup case. Each cup is a good 2.75 ounce serving.

If your cat is a finicky eater, having three types of food in one cup may be just what you need. The pate/mousse/shreds combo cup is a brilliant idea and we look forward to trying other Triple Layer flavors in the future!

Product Review: Taste of the Wild Canyon River Formula for Cats

My dog says KitCat was anxious to try out a new food this week, so we ordered something for him to taste test! He picked the Canyon River flavor from Taste of the Wild. Did KitCat like it? Let's see...

The Canyon River flavor is a grain-free, canned food and features trout as its first ingredient, with fish broth, vegetable broth, and ocean fish following suit. There's even some smoked salmon in it, and also carrots, blueberries, and raspberries for antioxidant support. Added taurine provides support for healthy heart function and strong eyesight, too!

The food is a chunky variety, with little cubes in a thick gravy. The gravy provides nice moisture for the food, but is not at all watery. It's nice and thick. The gravy also doesn't take up a lot of the can (like many foods in gravy!); this is a canned packed with meat.

KitCat seemed to find it necessary to take out one cube at a time, set it on the floor, and then eat it. He's a good and tidy little kitty, and he ate everything he took out. We assume he has his reasons for this ritual, so we just let him do what he needed to do.

Made in the United States, Taste of the Wild is a brand that is family-owned and operated. In this day of megaconglomerates, we like the idea of a family business that takes pride in its products!

Taste of the Wild Canyon River formula is available on Chewy.com in both 3 ounce and 5.5 ounce cans, both in 24 can cases. And it's a good price for a premium product.

What did KitCat rate this flavor of Taste of the Wild? He gave it a three out of four paws! He ate every last bit of it, but he didn't do the backflips required for a four-paw rating. Perhaps it's the cubes that threw him off? In any case, he definitely liked it and we'll be buying it again in the future!

Product Review: Purina Beyond Wild Prey-Inspired for Cats

My dog says for this review we're testing out something from Purina. This isn't a brand we normally buy, but they've been upping their offerings with better quality foods and we want to support that trend. So, we opted to try something from the Purina Beyond line and selected their Wild Prey-Inspired Turkey, Liver, and Quail recipe canned cat food.

The Wild Prey-Inspired is grain-free, and void of artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives. There is no by-product meal, either. Made with nutrient-rich organ meat, turkey is the number one ingredient. That's followed by chicken, liver, turkey broth, quail, chicken liver, carrots, egg product, and chicken hearts. That's a better ingredient list than some premium brands!

This is a nice and moist pate. Not hard to mash up at all, it's almost as soft as kitten food. We really liked the texture, and so did Kitcat!

The Purina Beyond Wild Prey-Inspired is available on Chewy.com in a 12-can case with 3 ounce cans. With autoship, it's only about $15. The Purina Beyond line also comes in a variety of flavors, including duck, turkey, chicken, and more.

We were delightfully surprised with the Purina Beyond Wild Prey-Inspired. This brand is doing a good job at offering higher quality products than they have in the past. The overall trend is moving toward better quality ingredients in pet foods and it's nice to see Purina working to improve it's product line and offer more premium foods.

KitCat gives the Purina Beyond three and 3/4 paws! Almost a perfect score! He gobbled it up and ran to it as soon as we put it down. Good job, Purina! KitCat approves!

Product Review: Nutro Wild Frontier Multipack for Cats

My dog says KitCat loves to eat, so we put him to work this week on a new review for you! This time, our resident feline tested out the Nutro Wild Frontier high protein/grain free variety pack! Was this ancestral inspired diet to his liking? Read on to find out!

Nutro offers the Wild Frontier variety packs in an assortment of flavors. We choose the chicken and beef recipe packed with the salmon and trout recipe. Hopefully we picked right for Sir Cat.

This food is not only grain free, but it doesn't have artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives. Inspired by nature, the Wild Frontier line is high protein. If a meat rich diet is important to you, you'll love this food. It's also made in America.

The chicken and beef recipe lists chicken liver, chicken, pork broth, chicken broth, and beef as it's first five ingredients. The salmon and trout recipe has salmon, chicken, chicken liver, pork broth, chicken broth, and trout as its first ingredients. There's a nice balance of whole meat along with meat broth in these foods, so they're meaty but moist. They're also packaged in portion sized trays which means no need for food lids or refrigeration. Just snap the unit in half and use one tray at a time.

Overall, KitCat seems to be a fan of the Nutro Wild Frontier line of food for cats. And the variety packs are a nice way of trying new flavors without being committed to a whole case with just one recipe (KitCat did prefer the fish flavor to the beef, but your results may vary). We'll continue to try new flavors, but rest assured the Nutro Wild Frontier multipack is something we'll definitely be reordering soon. We give this product 3.5 paws out of four! Nice job!

Product Review: I and Love and You Canned Cat Food

My dog says KitCat is pleased to bring you his latest review: I and Love and You canned cat food. His variety of choice? The grain free variety pack with three different recipes! Like any pet food brand with a savvy marketing team, getting the owners hooked is half the battle. We suspect that's why they came up with clever names like Chicken Me Out, Oh My Cod!, and Purrky Turkey! But fun names aside, was it a hit? Let's see.

The food was a good consistency, not too runny or soft and not to hard to mash up. It was easy for KitCat to eat and didn't change his stool.

As for the ingredients, all three flavors are grain free and that's important to us. This food is also void of artificial flavors and colors, and doesn't include gluten. For all three recipes, the first ingredient is whole meat. The first three ingredients for all flavors are listed below:

Chicken Me Out: chicken, chicken liver, chicken broth
Oh My Cod!: cod, chicken, chicken liver
Purrky Turkey: turkey, turkey liver, turkey broth

The rest of the ingredients are mostly a variety of fruits and veggies like spinach, apples, carrots, cranberries, and sweet potatoes, along with the usual vitamins and minerals. The recipe is designed for cats of all ages, from kitten up to adult and senior. 

We like variety packs because they allow us to try a few different flavors and KitCat loved two out of the three flavors (he usually loves turkey, but wasn't on board with this particular recipe). 

The I and Love and You Variety for cats pack sells on Chewy for a little over $13 with autoship. That includes 12 cans (4 of each flavor), each 3 ounces.

Out of four paws, we give this food an enthusiastic three paws up (since one of the flavors wasn't met with enthusiasm from KitCat, but that's not to say your cat won't love it!). So, in short, KitCat and Loved and It.

Product Review: Wellness Simply Shreds Tasty Topper for Cats

My dog says we love our KitCat and we're always looking for new foods he'll love. That's why this week we tested out a product from Wellness that we hoped would be a good addition to his diet. Did his discriminating palate enjoy it? Did he meow with delight? Read on, friends!

So far, we've been fans of the products we've tried from Wellness, so we were very excited to test out the Wellness Simply Shreds Savory Side for Cats. The wild salmon and tuna flavors sounded yummy so we gave that one a whirl!

When we get these shipped from Chewy, we're always very pleased with the packaging. Since these are pouches, they could get pierced in transit. But, they're put in sturdy cardboard boxes to prevent any damage during shipping (inside the box is the traditional retail display box if you want to keep these looking nice in your pantry).

This food is formulated to give your cat a meat-based, ancestral diet. That means no nonsense and one of the simplest ingredient lists you'll find in a cat food: salmon, fish broth, water sufficient for processing, and tuna. That's it, just four ingredients! No fillers, no ingredients you can't pronounce, nothing your kitty doesn't want. 

KitCat has already started a routine with these. He laps up the broth first, then eats the meat. He literally comes running when he knows this is what I'm preparing for him. 

The portion size is good for a meal or a snack, depending on your cat's weight and appetite. Serve it as a topper for your kitty's kibble or on the side so your cat can keep his kibble crunchy! KitCat enjoys it so much, we put in on the side so he can just enjoy it without kibble getting in the way.

Overall, we are very pleased with these toppers from Wellness. We've added them to our autoship on Chewy.com and are happy that we can make our KitCat so happy! We give this product four out of four paws and look forward to trying more flavors in this line.

Product Review: Instinct by Nature's Variety Cat Food Trays

My dog says KitCat is excited to share his thoughts with you on Instinct's minced cat food. Made by Nature's Variety, we sampled the chicken recipe. Was it a hit or a miss? Let's see.

Ingredients:

Instinct by Nature's Variety minced cat food chicken recipe has a great ingredient list. The first five ingredients are chicken broth, chicken, chicken liver, egg whites, and ground dried peas. There are also an assortment of fruits and vegetables, including spinach, carrots, artichokes, cranberries, pumpkins, tomato, blueberries, broccoli, cabbage, kale, and parsley.

Usability:

Instinct comes in handy trays with foil tops. This makes feeding super simple.

As for the food itself, we really liked the minced meat. It was smaller than chunks and a good size for KitCat to eat easily. We split up the food and gave half for breakfast and half for dinner. If your cat is a big eater (or doesn't eat kibble as a supplement), giving the full serving would be a very filling meal.

Cost: 

On chewy.com, the 3.5 ounce Instinct cat food cups are $21.48 for 12. It's a little pricey, but it's a good quality food, easy to use, and KitCat always licks his plate clean.

Rating:

KitCat really loves this food. He finishes every single bite of it and eats with enthusiasm. That's the best we can ever hope for, so we enthusiastically give this food four out of four paws!

Product Review: Wellness Core Simply Shreds for Cats

My dogs says today we're here to tell you about kitty food! Specially, Wellness Core Simply Shreds. Is it a hit or miss with our resident feline, KitCat? We tested it and here are our results.

Ingredients:

We're big fans of simple ingredient lists and this variety of Wellness Core is exactly what we like to see. Four ingredients. Total. No weird names you can't pronounce or don't know what they heck they are. It is simply tuna, fish broth, water sufficient for processing, and shrimp.

That makes us super happy. We know exactly what KitCat is eating, and it's ingredients we feel good about. No fillers, grains, or starches; just solid protein with Omega-3 fatty acids for good health.

Usability:

This variety of food, the Simply Shreds, comes in pouches. It's a nice single-size serving and comes with ample broth. It's not a stew type broth, more of a clear one that just keeps everything moist.

On the broth/pouch note, we only have one complaint. If you don't manage to tear off the top of the pouch all the way the first time, and have to go back to pull the rest of it off, you may end up with a mess. If the pouch is partially open and you go to put the top off the rest of the way, there's a strong likelihood you'll squeeze the pouch just enough to have fish broth and water come out the top and start dripping down your hand and arm. So word to the wise, pay attention when you tear so you pull the top off all the way across the pouch.

The Simply Shreds can be used as a topper for kibble or canned food, a side dish to your cat's regular meal, or as a snack all on it's own. We chose to use it as a snack so there weren't other tastes mixing in and KitCat could sample the product without distraction. He lapped up all the liquid enthusiastically and then I looked away for a minute. When I looked back, all the meat was gone. And I mean gone. No evidence there had been anything in the dish.

In regard to packaging, you can either open the box at the top or tear diagonally along the perforated lines so it creates a retail-like holder for the pouches. It's actually nice to have a choice so you can store the food in a way that makes the most sense for you and your pantry/kitchen.

Cost:

The current cost on Chewy for the Wellness Core Simply Shreds is $14.49 for a 12-pouch box, each 1.75 ounces of food.  Although this costs a little more than regular food, it's a high quality product and falls into the "you get what you pay for" category.

Rating:

As you can probably already tell, KitCat LOVED this food. L. O. V. E. D. (Yes, he's hard to see in the photo above because black cats don't photograph well, but you can absolutely see his tongue lapping up the broth!) We felt like we were doing something special for him when we saw how much be enjoyed this food. It was like he thought he was getting a special reward for being a wonderful kitty.

Our rating? Well, our top rating is four paws but that doesn't seem to be enough. So, let's just say we give this a four-plus-plus-plus. This is absolutely a product we'll be getting again and again.

Product Review: Blue Buffalo Wilderness Pate for Cats

My dog says today we're eager to share our thoughts on one of Blue Buffalo's products for cats. KitCat has his tastebuds at the ready, so let's get started.

Ingredients:

Blue Buffalo offers a pate, variety pack in three flavors: salmon, chicken, and duck. Each are grain-free and have solid ingredient lists, with meat as the first ingredient.

The duck has duck, turkey broth, and chicken liver. The chicken has chicken, chicken broth, and chicken liver. And the salmon has salmon, fish broth, and chicken liver. Each recipe also contains potatoes, but no corn, wheat, or soy. There are no chicken or poultry by-product meals in any of these foods.

Usability:

This is a nice, soft pate with an enticing broth. It's easy to eat and smells really enticing. It's similar to a kitten food in that has lots of moisture. Texture is ideal for kittens, adults, or seniors.

Made in the United States.

Cost:

The variety pack comes in a case of 12 cans, four of each variety. It's the "kitten size" cans, three ounces. The current cost for the Blue Buffalo at Chewy.com is $12.99, just a little over a buck a can, so that's a pretty competitive price for a high quality food. It's a little less with auto-ship.

Rating:

This is the second Blue Buffalo product KitCat has reviewed and he's really liked both of them (see his previous review on Blue Buffalo Tasty Toppers). KitCat ate with enthusiasm and he finished everything in his dish. This was a great food and it was clear he really liked it. How many paws do we give the Blue Buffalo Wilderness Pate Variety Pack? Four! Four paws up for sure.

Product Review: Evo 95 Cat Food

My dog says KitCat is back at it! He's been tasting food far and wide to give you his take. Today, we'll be giving you the scoop on one of the many products from Evo.

Billed as an "ancestral diet" that is similar to what cats eat in wild, Evo is rich in protein, but void of grains and potatoes, It's formulated to maintain lean muscle mass and a healthy body weight. There's many varieties, but we tried the Evo 95 Grain-Free Chicken and Turkey Recipe in Gravy.

Ingredients:

The Evo 95 line is food that is 95% animal protein. The first six ingredients in this particular flavor are chicken, water, turkey, beef liver, chicken liver, and fish oil. The rest is pretty much a variety of vitamins and minerals. Normally we don't like to see water so high up on the ingredient list, but I suspect it's there to create the gravy.

Usability:

To call this flavor a food in gravy is misleading (at least it misled me). Something in gravy usually leads me to believe the food is chunks in gravy. However this is a pate. When you scoop it out, you'll see gravy at the bottom of the can, though. The can is full to the top with pate; the gravy at the bottom really doesn't give you less food in the can.

A case of 24, 5.5 ounce cans is a little over $36 on chewy.com (you save about two bucks if you autoship).

Rating: 

KitCat likes this food alot. He eats it right away and finishes everything in his bowl. How many paws, do you ask? Make it four. Four. Paws. Up.
