Animal Rescuer Tina Lythgoe & Her Cleft Palate Puppy Josh Want to Change the World

My dog says there are thousands of good people out there who rescue dogs, and we're so glad they're there to help! But, there are some rescuers, the super special ones, who do more. Tina Lythgoe is one such rescuer.

Tina Lythgoe and Josh

Last January, Tina was asked if she could foster a young puppy who had just been dumped at the animal shelter. The pup was only 48 hours old and the heartless breeder had asked that he be killed. You see, the dog had a cleft palate and the man knew he couldn't make a hefty profit off an imperfect dog so he decided killing the innocent creature was the best solution (how evil and soulless can you be?). Fortunately, the shelter staff wanted to give this sweet baby a chance and a rescue group went to pick up the tiny pup to deliver to Tina.

Tina bottle fed him, trying to give his little body the nourishment and warmth he needed to stay alive. A puppy should be with his mom and siblings during those early days and Tina barely slept so she could help the little boy pull through. Thanks to Tina's heroic efforts, the pup thrived and he was named Josh.

Josh at two days old.
Over that last 11 months, people on Facebook have watched Josh grow and flourish. He's had to have a few teeth removed since they didn't fit in his mouth quite right, but the palate itself will not require surgery. Josh has a little bit of an Elvis sneer, but can eat fine despite the cleft palate and is one happy little guy.

Tina, however, doesn't just rescue dogs. She rescues all kinds of critters: squirrels, opossums (check out Topo Gigio the Possum's Facebook page!), birds, gophers, turtles, pigs, rats, and anyone else who needs her. Many require around the clock care until they're out of the woods. Then, if the wild ones are able to fend for themselves, Tina releases them back into their natural habitat.

Tina is one of those folks who champions the underdog (we love those people!) and she's been sharing Josh's story to raise awareness about birth defects in dogs. She's also partnered with other special needs dogs on Facebook (such as Munster who has spina bifida and Brogan who has Addison's disease) to help show people that "imperfect" dogs are still special and wonderful and worthy of love and lifelong homes.

Part of Tina's mission to educate has included entering Josh in a cover dog contest. The dog with the most votes, as determined by the public, will be featured on the cover of Modern Dog magazine. Tina believes if Josh wins, it will help further the discussion about birth defects in dogs and the dangers of backyard breeding, She's been rallying Josh's Facebook friends to vote for him so he can be an advocate for all the other "imperfect" dogs out there (to vote for Josh, click HERE). Tina tried to get Josh on the cover last year, but he only came in second.

The pups here at My Dog Says Woof sat down today with Josh and Tina and asked a little about their mission to help animals.

My Dog Says Woof: Why do you save ALL the critters and not just the ones people consider "cute"?
Tina Lythgoe: I don't discriminate. I feel the need to help everything. Even what people consider pests, like rats, gophers, mice, and pigeons. Some people save dogs and just dogs. Why? Why stop there?
If something needs help I will jump through fire to help it. I will stay up all night. I will fight for its life. Even if it has given up, I won't. And I usually win, because I don't give up. I will never turn a critter down no matter what. If I don't have time, I will make time. If it has a heartbeat, I will help it. Even a human. Everything deserves a chance.
My Dog Says Woof: Why is it important to educate people about birth defects?
Tina Lythgoe: As for births defects, I just want people to know that they don't need to be a death sentence. Animals can still live happy, healthy lives. And if they can't afford it, there is help out there.
Most backyard breeders don't even know that they should not be breeding mothers and sons. We need to educate people.
My Dog Says Woof: Why do you believe so strongly in helping animals?
Tina Lythgoe: I have always believed in helping anything that needs help. I learned everything I know from my mom. She showed me how to do it all.
As a kid I watched her do it. As I got older, I took over. I would not be the person I am today if it wasn't for her.
My Dog Says Woof: If you had 3 wishes, what would they be?
Tina Lythgoe: Wish #1. I wish the whole world would go vegan so the killing would stop. Who are we to kill something with a heartbeat? Who the hell saves a dog and goes home and eats a cow?
Wish #2. Have ALL no kill shelters!
Wish #3. I wish people would realize that wildlife lives outside and they have babies to feed. It's their land, too. If they're in your yard or on your lawn, eating your plants, remember that the outside world is their house. I wish people would have more compassion for so-called "pests."
My Dog Says Woof: Josh's page, Josh and His Critters, has more than 50,000 likes on Facebook and continues to grow. What is the best part of having such a large Facebook community?
Tina Lythgoe: Having a large following helps us to get the word out. We love sharing pages and links to donate to needy causes. We do not discriminate. We help ALL organizations, not just one.
We love joining contests because it helps us educate people and win money to save more critters. We love helping other people and pets win contests, too. Most pages will ignore you, but not ️Josh and His Critters. We will help everybody because that's what it's all about.
Most of all I want people not to lose hope in humanity. We are strong together. And together we can accomplish anything. Also maybe if someone sees me helping a harmless pest like a gopher or other wild creature, maybe it will change their mind about killing one.

My Dog Says Woof: If Josh wins the Modern Dog Magazine cover contest, what will be the first thing you'll do to celebrate?
Tina Lythgoe: Just thinking about ️Josh on the cover of Modern Dog makes me want to cry. That's how hard we tried to win it last time. When was the last time you saw someone with a cleft palate on the cover of a magazine? NEVER. You usually see a beautiful purebred on the cover. I will celebrate in my tears if we win. I will cry my eyes out. I feel like crying now just thinking about it.

The Modern Dog magazine cover dog contest ends on January 7, 2015 at noon (Pacific time), so please take a moment to vote for Josh so he can continue to be a voice for other animals with birth defects. Vote HERE. Voting is allowed every 12 hours. (UPDATE: Josh won the contest and appears on the cover of the Spring 2015 issue of Modern Dog magazine!)

Also be sure to connect with Josh and Tina on FacebookInstagram, and Twitter so you can follow the wonderful rescue stories they share and the fabulous photos of all the critters in their care.

Dog Living at Sea for Three Weeks Gets Rescued

My dog says this is some good video of a dog rescue in Japan. This pup was spotted on a massive collection of floating debris out at sea for three weeks, following the country's earthquake and tsunami. You can't see the dog until about :35 into the video, put you get a good look at what he was living on. Amazing that he could have survived for so long.

Despite all the devastation in Japan, this is one story with a happy ending.

Don't Judge a Shelter Dog by Her Fear or Matted Hair

My dog says if you open your heart--and your eyes--every dog out there makes for a wonderful companion. This video is a great reminder that the abused, the neglected, the dirty, and the unsightly just need a human to see them for who they are inside and extend a gentle and compassionate hand. Check out Edie's story. It's a moving account about how quickly a dog can be won over when a human just shows a little patience and kindness.

Do just one thing today to help animals

My dog says this is the most wonderful video he's seen in awhile. It's also a great reminder that all of us can do just one thing each and every day to help animals. No matter how big or small, do something.

This video has a happy ending and nothing gory in it. But, be forewarned, it might make you shed tears of happiness. My mom was crying her eyes out. A very wonderful story.

Little man is big hero to pitbulls

My dog says he is anxious to see the new show Pit Boss on Animal Planet. It's about a guy, Shorty Rossi, who runs a talent agency for little people and is founder of Shorty's Pit Bull Rescue.

Watch the trailer below and I think you'll be as excited to see the show as I am. Pit Boss premieres on January 16 at 10:00 pm on Animal Planet.

Two woofs for Shorty!

From stray dog to spoiled pooch

My dog says he's turning over the blog to his sister Faith today. Faith, have at it!

Hi folks, I'm Faith. This is my first guest post on Puddy's blog.

Today I felt compelled to write something personal so I hope you'll bear with me. I've been with my family since 2006. Three years ago on this very day I was lost, starving, cold, and scared. I was limping because I had been hit by a car and my teeth were in bad shape because I was so hungry that I was chewing on things that weren't edible (I was underweight and just a small, 75 pound little girl). I had just about given up hope that someoneanyonewould help me. That's when I saw her.

A woman was getting into her car on a very industrial street. She was kneeling on the front seat, leaning into the back rearranging some bags and didn't see me on the other side of the road. MAC trucks were speeding by so fast it was all I could do to cross all four lanes to get to her in one piece. I had been through so much and I simply needed some help. Her car door was still open so I quickly snuck up and bolted inside. Safety at last!

I was panting and pacing around in her compact car; so terribly relieved to be off the street. The woman stared at me in disbelief. I smiled.

To make a long story short, the lady fixed me up, took me home, and made me part of her family. There are so many lost and scared animals out on the streets, fending for themselves, and I know I'm one of the lucky ones because I was saved (although she always tells me she's the lucky one).

My only wish on my anniversary is that everyone who reads this does something to help an animal in need. Pick up a stray, feed a feral cat, take an injured wild animal to someone who can tend to his or her injuries. Make a difference, embrace compassion, and extend the circle of kindness to all animals, wild and domestic. Do something.

Thanks for listening to my story. I hate to rush off, but my family has a special anniversary party planned for me.

Until next time,
Faith

From tails of woe to Tails of Joy!

My dog says there are lots of needy animals out there in need of your help! Why not lend a hand by supporting Tails of Joy, the wonderful nonprofit started by comedian Elayne Boosler. Check out the video below to learn more about how TOJ is making a difference in the lives of animals!

Rescue Ink Unleashed premieres tonight

My dog says that you MUST watch Rescue Ink Unleashed tonight on the National Geographic channel. If you don't know about the amazing guys of Rescue Ink, click HERE. They are tattooed, biker dudes who love animals and aren't afraid to use their muscles to fight for them.

They also just put out a brand new book this month, Rescue Ink: How Ten Guys Saved Countless Dogs and Cats, Twelve Horses, Five Pigs, One Duck, and a Few Turtles. Click HERE to check it out on Amazon and get it at a sweet discount. And, if you're in the New York area, the guys have some book signings coming up, too.

I love these men. Tough exteriors with hearts of gold. Totally my heroes. Go Rescue Ink!

Babysitters by day, dogfighters at night

My dog says this story about a dog fighting ring at a daycare facility in Illinois is quite sad. Thank goodness all the dogs have been saved and are now being rehabilitated by the Animal Welfare League.

It's Elephant Appreciation Day!

My dog says that today, September 22, is Elephant Appreciation Day. To honor these magnificent animals, why not learn more about them by visiting The Elephant Sanctuary website.

This amazing sanctuary in Tennessee is home to Asian and African elephants who were previously on display at zoos, circuses, or other entertainment venues. Now, they can enjoy their retirement years on soft dirt and green grass. The sanctuary even has a live Elecam where you can see what the elephants are doing on any given day.

It costs $125,000 annually to take care of each of elephant under the sanctuary's care, so why not consider "adopting" one to help pay for his/her care? Now, that would be a nice way to celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day!

Learn to train with love and respect

My dog says if you're in the Los Angeles area, you must attend this great seminar by renowned animal expert, Warren Eckstein (if you're not in L.A., check out Warren's books on Amazon). Warren's approach to working with animals is that they are familycreatures to be loved, not dominated. If you have companion animals of your own or if you rescue animals to place into new homes, you will get lots of useful information on animal behavior during this 3-hour session.

Free money for your favorite animal charity

My dog says The Christie Cookie Company is sponsoring a contest that will give $25,000 to charity. You may choose from a list of charities or pick your own (so pick your favorite animal rescue group or animal sanctuary!).

$10,000 goes to the charity with the most nominations, $5,000 to the second place winner, and $1,000 to the next 10 charities with the most votes. Be sure to nominate your favorite animal charity by October 15, 2009.

Rescue group falls victim to theft

My dog says a person who would steal from an animal rescue group is a low life. Home Fur-Ever in Detroit lost a van, trailer, and $6,000 worth of gear to a heartless thief this week.

If you can donate animal equipment (they especially need large crates to transport dogs to adoption events), or are able to make a monetary donation to replace the items, mail it to Home Fur-Ever, P.O. 10203, Detroit 48210. Or, if you're in the Detroit area, you may drop off donations in person from noon to 4 p.m. this Saturday at Petco, 1217 Coolidge, in Troy, Michigan.

To learn more about the work of Home Fur-Ever, visit their website by clicking HERE.

Compassion for animals comes to the Wii

My dog says that there is a GREAT new game on the Wii to teach your children about animal rescue. Beverly Nation wrote a wonderful article about the game, so go right to source and read her review HERE.

Imagine raising a new generation of compassionate kids who care about and respect animals. Wow, that would be a wonderful thing.

Click to help fund food for animals

My dog says that you should make The Animal Rescue Site the homepage on your computer. It has fun merchandise for animal lovers and if you click the button on the homepage daily, you'll help fund food for needy dogs and cats. Yes, just a click daily and you can help animals!

Also, if you become a fan of The Animal Rescue Site on Facebook, you'll get extra special offers and discounts. Thank you Animal Rescue Site for making it so easy to help animals!

Military dogs need homes

My dog says he just discovered this great group that's trying to place dogs who have served in the military. These animals have served our country with valor and the least they serve is a place to call home. Find out how you can help or adopt by clicking HERE.

Always adopt

My dog says not to breed or buy while homeless animals die. Watch this video from Born to Die Pets that gives a behind the scenes look at an animal shelter.

If you love your animals, get them altered. Spaying and neutering saves lives and makes your animals healthier! I'm neutered and I swear on a stack of Milk Bones that it didn't hurt a bit.

Harvey Levin is great

My dog says that he knew he liked Harvey Levin of TMZ. Last week, Harvey made John Mayer donate $25,000 to two great animal rescue organizations when John lost a bet (Ace of Hearts and Pet Orphans of Southern California were the lucky groups).

Here's some new info from today about the four-legged recipients of the cash. Pud says extra treats and ear scratches for Harvey!

Free treats for doggie shelters and rescue dogs

My dog says that Best Bully Sticks is giving away hundreds of dollars in treats to animal shelters and rescue dogs. Find out how you can win by clicking HERE. ** Pud says he hasn't tried these so he can't offer any insight on the yumminess factor.

Animal organizations need to enter this contest

My dog says that dog rescue groups should check out this promotion from Rachel Ray. $200,000 is going to organizations that support animal rescue, rehabilitation, or adoption. More details HERE. Hurry, deadline for submissions is September 30, 2009.
