Product Review: Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Formula for Cats

My dog says we're having a great time celebrating St. Patrick's Day this week! We're all about the green, so we chose a cat food with a green label to taste test for you this month: Taste of the Wild Rocky Mountain Feline Formula in Gravy for cats! Is this product all that it's green label purports to be? Let's see!

Ingredients:

We always choose high quality foods to share with you and this one is no different. The first several ingredients in this canned cat food are salmon, fish broth, chicken broth, chicken liver, and dried egg whites. Right there it pretty much sounds like some fancy dish you'd make for human company coming over for a special occasion, huh? There's also smoked salmon, roasted venison, ocean fish, peas, tomatoes, blueberries, and raspberries.

This grain-free food is formulated to lower carb intake and increase water intake. Both really good things for the cat in your life.

Oh, and if your cat prefers a different taste, the Taste of the Wild canned food also comes in Canyon River flavor that contains trout, fish broth, vegetable broth, ocean fish, smoked salmon, carrots, and sweet potatoes.

Usability:

This is a chunky food. Although it's labelled as a gravy product, it doesn't have the usual watery gravy you generally see. It's more like a thick sauce that keeps the chunks moist, but it's nothing your cat would lap up. The food is essentially little cubes of meat and they're cut into sizes just perfect for your kitty's adorable little mouth.

We were all ready to give the Taste of the Wild to KitCat to try, but this duck in St. Patrick's Day garb horned in for a sample. We think she wandered away from a parade or pageant.

No duck in this food, right?
No no, Miss Duck! Please enjoy with confidence!
You don't seriously expect me to try this
after that prissy little duck put her beak in it, do you?

Origin:

Made in the U.S.A. (Sorry, but we couldn't find a food from Ireland to review for you this month. The leprechauns must have blocked it all at the border.)

Cost:

The size you see sampled here is the 3 ounce can (we call it 3 leaf clover size), which is sold in a 24-can case for $16.58 on Chewy. They also have a 5.5 ounce can that sells for $30.96 for 24 cans.

Oh my! A leprechaun chased away the duck and laid claim to these cans.
Next best thing to a pot o' gold, don't cha' know!

Rating:

As is usually the case, when we give KitCat a food that comes in chunks, he likes to take it out one piece at a time, set it on the floor, eat it, and then go back for another chunk. It's quite ritualistic. That said, he really liked the Rocky Mountain formula and it was a hearty meal. Overall, a scrumptious dish to celebrate St, Patrick's Day (second only to corned beef and cabbage)!

Where's my shamrock garnish?
Fine, I'll try it anyway but I'm lodging a complaint with the appropriate authorities.

We give Taste of the Wild canned food in Rocky Mountain flavor two webbed feet up (that would normally be four paws, but the duck insisted we use her rating system this time!).

Thanks for reading and may there be a pot of gold at the end of your rainbow this holiday, my friends! Until next time...QUACK!

It's National Answer Your Cat's Questions Day

My dog says that cats are more complicated than dogs. Sometimes they're coy. Other times they're aloof. And, boy can they be mischievous. We pity the ball of yarn that thinks it can take on a kitty.

So, yes, today is National Answer Your Cat's Questions Day. Take the time to ask your kitty what's on his or her mind. What do they like and not like. What can you do to be a better pet parent? And really take the time to listen. Don't let the day slip by without giving your kitty his say. What's new pussy cat?

Simon the Cat and the Christmas Tree

My dog says there's nothing more fun for the family pet during the holiday season than playing with the Christmas tree! If you've ever had a cat in your life, this scene will probably ring true!

It's Pitbull Appreciation Day!

My dog says today is Pitbull Appreciation Day! Yay yay, woof woof! On this special day, and on every day, remember to punish the deed and not the breed! Dogs are individuals with their own unique personalities, so please say no to breed specific legislation (BSL) if it comes to your city!

Check out these pitties with their families and tell me all pitbulls are bad! No can do! Oh, no, no, no!

The holidays are murder on turkeys

My dog says the holidays are no holiday for turkeys! This comic says it all. Something to think about as you start your shopping for Christmas dinner. Everyone--human, furry, and feathered--wants to enjoy living life.

Even turkeys want to give thanks on Thanksgiving

My dog says Thanksgiving is a day for all of us to relish family and be thankful for the wonderful things in our lives. Ever stop to think that a turkey is just as grateful for his or her life as you are for yours? Of course they are!

So why not bring some compassion to your holiday season by serving a cruelty-free meal? Check out the suggestions in the video below and meet Lily the turkey. After all, shouldn't everyone be thankful on Thanksgiving?

Halloween can be frightening for your pets

My dog says to remember that Halloween can be a scary and dangerous time for your family pets. Be sure to keep your cats and dogs inside so they don't fall victim to pranks or theft.

Also be careful your companion animals don't dart out the door if you're staying home to greet Trick-or-Treaters; all the activity at the front door allows for a quick escape. Put your animals in the bedroom or den for the evening, give them a nice soft bed and some treats, and shut the door until everyone is settled in for the night.

Lastly, remember that all the costumes and masks can be frightening to animals, especially dogs. Faces are covered, people's outfits may make them appear larger or taller, and gestures may be more animated than usual. Even these slight changes can spook your animal or cause them to not recognize you.

Halloween is fun for humans, but be sure it's a stress free day for your companion animals. Happy Halloween!

The misunderstood bat

My dog says he doesn't understand why people get squeamish when they see animals who aren't fluffy and traditionally cute like he is. Bats, for example, are amazing animals who also provide a valuable service to the communities in which they live. There are more than 1,100 varieties, 70 percent of which eat insects (and, therefore, keep towns from being overrun with bugs!).

The Organization for Bat Conservation offers great programs to educate people about the wonders and variety of bats, how to make bat houses, and how to coexist with bats. You can even sponsor a bat!

This Halloween, when you put out that rubber bat as decoration, why not take the opportunity to tell your friends and family about the amazing world of bats. To learn more about these fascinating mammals, you can also visit Bat Conservation International.

Halloween fun that also benefits kitty cats

My dog says if you're looking for something fun to do this Halloween and want to help a great cause, he's got just the answer for you. For those in the LA area, check out the Halloween FUNraising Party sponsored by the Stray Cat Alliance. Lots of entertaining activities and great food, and the best part is the MC, renowned animal expert Warren Eckstein.

Details are below, or visit www.straycatclub.org to purchase tickets.

It's Saint Francis' birthday

My dog says that today is the birthday of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of animals. Why not celebrate the day by doing something special to help the creatures with whom we all share the planet?

Donate towels or blankets to your local animal shelter, have a feral cat spayed or neutered, buy your dog a new toy, play with your kitty, feed the birds, throw peanuts to the squirrels, make a contribution to your favorite animal charity, or do something nice for a companion animal in your neighborhood.

If you love animals, find a special way to honor them today (and every day!).

It's World Vegetarian Day!

My dog says that he's excited that today is World Vegetarian Day (and the first day of Vegetarian Awareness Month)! If you're already a vegetarian or vegan, why not help others understand how easy it is to live a cruelty-free lifestyle? Click HERE to learn how to promote a veggie diet in your community.

Not a vegetarian? Here are some simple ways to get started down the path of compassionate living (courtesy of the North American Vegetarian Society):

It's Elephant Appreciation Day!

My dog says that today, September 22, is Elephant Appreciation Day. To honor these magnificent animals, why not learn more about them by visiting The Elephant Sanctuary website.

This amazing sanctuary in Tennessee is home to Asian and African elephants who were previously on display at zoos, circuses, or other entertainment venues. Now, they can enjoy their retirement years on soft dirt and green grass. The sanctuary even has a live Elecam where you can see what the elephants are doing on any given day.

It costs $125,000 annually to take care of each of elephant under the sanctuary's care, so why not consider "adopting" one to help pay for his/her care? Now, that would be a nice way to celebrate Elephant Appreciation Day!

Save a chicken

My dog says September is National Chicken Month. Instead of celebrating by eating chickens, why not take this time to learn more about these wonderful creatures. Better yet, celebrate by giving a chicken the gift of life and going vegetarian. Compassion Over Killing has tips on how you can help our feathered friends.
